Continuing education is item 9 on that list: successful completion of 10 contact hours per renewal period of continuing education or in-service education applicable to nursing practice. An LPN can therefore renew with no continuing education at all by documenting two of the other items. Renewal cycle and basis come from rule 1000-01-.05(1) and the board's own page, which says nurses renew every two years. Continued competence comes from rule 1000-01-.18, whose subparagraph (2)(a) is headed Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses, so the same rule is the source for both the LPN and the RN record and the requirement is identical apart from item 8, participating in the formal education of nursing students, which the rule limits to registered nurses and which is therefore omitted from this record. Chapter 1000-02, the LPN chapter, no longer contains any renewal or competence rule: parts 1000-02-.03 through 1000-02-.18 are repealed and the general chapter 1000-01 governs both license types. Two board sources give different continuing education hour figures for the optional CE item. The board's Continuing Competence Requirements handout, dated 8/2017 and still posted on the board's site, says five contact hours (ten for nurses who are not practicing) and cites the pre-2024 rule numbers 1000-01-.14, 1000-02-.14, and 1000-04-.05. The current rule text, filed as a repeal and new rules on July 10, 2024 with a stated effective date of October 8, 2024 and revised April 2026, says ten contact hours per renewal period with no practicing versus non-practicing split, and renumbers the requirement to 1000-01-.18. The rule states its effective date, so this record follows the rule and flags the stale handout rather than recording a conflict.
