Georgia Certified Nurse-Midwife license renewal and CE requirements
Georgia nurse-midwives must complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years to renew their license with the Georgia Board of Nursing.
A Georgia nurse-midwife holds a registered professional nurse license plus Board authorization to practice as a certified nurse-midwife, and Rule 410-11-.02(4) governs the authorization. The date for renewal of the authorization coincides with the renewal of the registered professional nurse license, and the authorization expires on January 31 of odd-numbered years and is administratively revoked if not renewed. For continued authority to practise the nurse-midwife must submit a completed renewal application for advanced nursing practice, a copy of current national certification with its expiration date from the ACNM Certification Council, and the renewal fee. A renewal application postmarked after January 31 of an odd-numbered year is returned to the applicant, who must then apply to reinstate the authorization. The underlying registered nurse license runs on the same January 31 biennial schedule under Rule 410-5-.01, with one difference worth knowing: the RN license has a late renewal period through the last day of February, while the nurse-midwife authorization has no such window. A registered nurse may not practise after the expiration date of the license, and an RN license not renewed by the posted deadline lapses and may be reinstated at the board's discretion.

Georgia Certified Nurse-Midwife renewal and continuing education rules
"Not stated" means the board's pages and rules we read do not address it. We do not fill in typical values.
| Renewal cycle | Two-year (24 months) |
|---|---|
| Renewal deadline | Same date for every licensee, 01/31 each cycle |
| Continuing education required | Yes |
| Hours per cycle | 30 contact hours |
| Self-study or online cap | No cap stated |
| Carryover to next cycle | Not stated |
| First renewal exempt | Not stated |
| Other accepted activities | Maintenance of certification or recertification by a national certifying body recognized by the Board. This is the route a nurse-midwife normally takes, since ACNM Certification Council certification is already a condition of renewing the nurse-midwife authorization.; Completion of an accredited academic program of study in nursing or a related field recognized by the Board; Verification of competency by a health care facility or entity licensed under O.C.G.A. 31-7, or by a physician's office that is part of a health system, together with at least 500 hours practised, certified by the employer on a board approved form; Other activities prescribed and approved by the board that show competency in the nursing field |
Georgia attaches no continuing education hour count to the nurse-midwife authorization itself. Rule 410-11-.02(4) lists only three renewal items: the application, a copy of current ACNM Certification Council certification, and the fee. The hour figure recorded here is the registered nurse continuing competency requirement in Rule 410-13-.01, which the nurse-midwife owes through the registered professional nurse license that the authorization sits on. That rule is written as a choice of five ways to show continuing competency during the biennial renewal period, and 30 continuing education hours from a board approved provider is only the first of them. Maintenance of certification or recertification by a board recognized national certifying body is the second, and because a Georgia nurse-midwife must hold current ACNM Certification Council certification to renew the authorization anyway, that option ordinarily satisfies the registered nurse requirement without any separate hours. So Georgia neither stacks an advanced practice total on the registered nurse total nor runs a parallel clock: there is one requirement, on the RN license, and national certification discharges it. The board specifically excludes work related certifications such as Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, the Trauma Nursing Core Course and Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization from satisfying the certification option. A national certifying body seeking board recognition must show that its process includes an initial written or online examination and that its certification includes continuing competency requirements or reexamination as a condition of recertification. The board may waive or modify the continuing competency requirement for hardship, disability or illness, or in other circumstances it considers appropriate. There is a narrow first renewal relief rather than a general one: an applicant renewing a license for the first time is not required to meet the requirement until the second renewal only if the initial license period was six months or less, which is why exempt_first_renewal is null rather than true. Nothing here counts AMCB or ACNM Certificate Maintenance Program totals as state hours; certification is used as a pass or fail condition, not converted into a number.
Required CE topics for Georgia certified nurse-midwifes
The Georgia Board of Nursing pages and rules we read do not mandate specific subject areas for this license type. Hours may be in any approved subject.
Documentation and audit
| Proof submitted at renewal | Yes |
|---|---|
| Keep records for | 4 years |
| Board audits compliance | Yes |
| Approved providers | Continuing education hours, if that is the option chosen, must come from a board approved provider. The Georgia Board of Nursing has adopted CE Broker as the online reporting and recording system for licensees, at no cost to the licensee for basic reporting and recording, and every licensee is deemed to consent to the board accessing those records to audit and verify completion. Documentation of continuing competency activities must be kept for no less than four years from the date of licensure renewal and produced if the licensee is audited during renewal or during any investigation; failure to produce it is grounds for denial of the renewal application or for revocation or immediate suspension of the license. Separately, and unlike the continuing competency documentation, the nurse-midwife authorization renewal itself requires a copy of current ACNM Certification Council certification showing its expiration date to be submitted with the renewal application, which is why proof_at_renewal is true. |

- Do Georgia nurse-midwives have to submit CE certificates at renewal?
- Proof of completion must be submitted with the renewal, the board audits a sample of renewals and asks for documentation, and records must be kept for 4 years. Georgia recognizes the certified nurse-midwife by name and gives it its own rule. Rule 410-11-.01(2)(a) lists the certified nurse-midwife first among the five advanced practice categories the Georgia Board of Nursing authorizes, and Rule 410-11-.02 is headed Rules for Certified Nurse-Midwives, defining the CNM as a registered professional nurse who graduated from a post-basic nurse-midwifery program with advanced pharmacology in the curriculum, is certified by the ACNM Certification Council, and is authorized to practise by the board. Georgia issues this as an authorization on top of the RN license rather than as a separate license, which is why the renewal fields describe the authorization and the continuing education field describes the RN license. Establishing that the rule read governs nurse-midwives rather than other midwives is unusually clean in Georgia, and the answer is that there are no other midwives. The Department of Public Health's own midwifery rule, 511-5-1-.02, states that no person shall practise midwifery or hold themselves out as a midwife unless that person has current certification from the Georgia Board of Nursing to practise as a Certified Nurse-Midwife in accordance with the Rules for Certified Nurse-Midwives, and that this board certification is the certification required under O.C.G.A. 31-26-2 with no additional certification from the Department of Public Health or a county board of health. So Georgia has no Certified Professional Midwife, licensed midwife or direct-entry midwife credential to confuse with the CNM; the nursing board's CNM authorization is the only lawful route to midwifery practice in the state. ACNM Certification Council certification is required at renewal, submitted as a copy showing its expiration date, and it separately serves as one of the five ways to satisfy the registered nurse continuing competency requirement, so it functions both as a renewal condition and as a substitute for the 30 hours. Access note: rules.sos.ga.gov has previously blocked automated clients and sos.ga.gov still returns 403 to every automated request, including the board's own home page at sos.ga.gov/georgia-board-nursing, so no board web page could be read. On this pass rules.sos.ga.gov served the rule text in full to an ordinary browser user agent, and every figure in this record was read there, on the Secretary of State's official rules host. Because the substantive values sit on an official Georgia host, confidence is high. The board home page URL is not cited, and board_url points at Department 410 on the rules host instead, matching the existing Georgia nursing records. No mandated subject is recorded: Chapter 410-11 sets no continuing education topic for any advanced practice category, Chapter 410-13 sets none, and the nurse protocol provisions in Chapter 410-11 govern what an APRN may order rather than what the APRN must study. Nothing here contradicts the existing ga-rn, ga-np or ga-crna records. One refinement rather than a conflict: those records describe the renewal date as January 31 of even or odd years per the Joint Secretary rules, which is what Rule 410-5-.01 says for the RN license, while Rule 410-11-.02(4)(b) states the nurse-midwife authorization specifically expires January 31 of odd-numbered years, so this record can be that much more precise.
Provided for general reference. Requirements change through legislative sessions and rulemaking, so confirm with the Georgia Board of Nursing before relying on them for a renewal. Spot something out of date? Tell us and we will fix it.
