Michigan Dentist license renewal and CE requirements
Michigan dentists must complete 60 contact hours of continuing education every three years to renew their license with the Michigan Board of Dentistry, Bureau of Professional Licensing, Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

R 338.11701(2) requires an applicant for dentist license renewal who has been licensed for the full three year period to complete not less than 60 hours of board approved continuing education during the three year period before the end of the license cycle. The registered dental hygienist requirement is set separately in R 338.11704(2) at 36 hours and neither figure was derived from the other. Within the 60 hours, at least 20 must be in programs directly related to clinical issues including delivery of care, materials used in delivery of care and pharmacology, and at least 20 must be earned by attending synchronous live courses, in person or virtual, that allow direct interaction between faculty and participants. No more than 30 hours may be earned asynchronously and non-interactively; the 20 hour clinical minimum is recorded in the category 1 field because Michigan uses no category 1 or category 2 language of its own. A dental specialist renewing a specialist license must place at least 20 of the 60 hours in the specialty field. Hours earned through volunteer patient or supportive dental services do not count toward any of the subject minimums, and a licensee may not earn credit twice for an identical program in the same renewal period. The 60 hour dentist total is in R 338.11701(2) and the 36 hour registered dental hygienist total is in R 338.11704(2), separate rules with separate subject minimums, and neither was scaled from the other. The ars.apps.lara.state.mi.us URLs used here carry ReturnHTML=True and returned HTML, not a PDF; the response content type was checked before reading. R 338.7002 lists both Dentistry and Dental Hygienist as triennial licenses expiring on the issue date, so the two credentials share a cycle even though their hour totals differ. Implicit bias training is required by R 338.7004 at one hour per year of the cycle but, unlike for most other Michigan professions, R 338.11701(7) bars a dental licensee from counting it as continuing education, so the 3 hours sit outside the 60. Human trafficking training is one time and may be double counted. MCL 333.16201 leaves expiration dates to rule and adds a 60 day grace period. The rules state no carryover provision and no first-renewal proration for a licensee who has held the license for the full three years; the hour totals in R 338.11701 and R 338.11704 are written for an applicant licensed for the whole three year period, and the rules for shorter first terms were not located, so exempt_first_renewal and first_renewal_prorated are left null.
