A plain-language glossary of the ten credentialing terms — from PSV to privileging — that every healthcare administrator should know.

Credentialing Specialist
Sonia McCracken is a credentialing specialist with nearly two decades of experience managing regulated credentialing, privileging, and medical staff governance in a hospital environment. Her work has spanned end-to-end credentialing and recredentialing for large provider rosters, primary source verification, peer review tracking, Medical Executive Committee support, and the compliance and accreditation readiness work that most organizations only think about when an auditor shows up.
Over the course of her career she has designed and implemented systems for monitoring credential expirations, led the transition from laundry-list privileging to standardized core privilege structures, and partnered across provider enrollment, quality assurance, and risk management to keep credentialing programs audit-ready. She has worked directly within the CMS and Washington State compliance frameworks that govern hospital credentialing.
Sonia is currently completing an Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Management at Spokane Community College, where she has been recognized on the Honor Roll.
Her writing reflects the perspective of someone who has spent nearly two decades inside the credentialing workflows she writes about.
